Kate Walker comes into the village of Valadilene and notices a funeral taking place. At the hotel, she encounters a boy named Momo, who fiddles with a piece of machinery. At the reception, when asked about the funeral, the receptionist explains it's for Anna Voralberg, the owner of a spring-automaton toy factory. Kate is here to oversee a company taking over the factory to keep it afloat. She receives a fax to take to the notary.
